Preparing for College

students on a campus of a college
The last years of high school and the transition to college are a challenging time. Students must cope with increasing levels of independence that require maturity and good judgment. They must manage their time, work, budget, diet and often jobs, as well as new people and relationships. This is demanding and stressful.

American Leadership programs help students prepare for these challenges as they learn to manage a greater level of independence, work in teams, and make decisions for themselves and others. They take responsibility for their budget and their time. They navigate strange cultures, strange places and overcome language barriers. They step out of their comfort zone and overcome shyness and apprehension. They learn the dynamics of working in a team, communicating effectively and respecting varied points of view  to obtain common goals. They learn to be adaptable, and to push themselves further than they ever thought possible

The sooner students start to prepare, the better equipped they are to  succeed.

What are Colleges Looking For?

Someone Who Stands Out

An application must do more than highlight accomplishments and biographical data. It must also reveal who the applicant is; what makes them unique and interesting.  It should describe unusual or challenging experiences, and explain how those experiences impacted  the applicant, changed them and helped them grow.

Colleges want confident, responsible student leaders with broad interests, who have what it takes to make a positive contribution to campus life, and a difference in the world.
