How do I start?
The application process consists of three easy steps:
1. Select a program, departure date and departure city. Then fill out the remaining required information on the Application Form, have your parents/guardians read the Agreement and sign it and submit your initial payment.
2. Submit two recommendations from teachers. The teachers you ask can do this directly through this website once you have begun the application process, or you can download paper forms to give them, along with stamped envelopes addressed to American Leadership Admissions, 50 Franklin St, Boston MA 02110 .
3. Complete a telephone interview with an American Leadership representative.

What do the meetings entail?
Meetings are conducted by American Leadership advisers to provide program details to students and families. You’ll learn about the program, meet a Teacher Counselor and have an opportunity to ask questions. Meetings are in person or via the Internet subject to availability. Click here to reserve a spot
If you sign up for a meeting and can’t make it we will make arrangements to speak with you and your family at a time that works for you.

Does American Leadership provide any options to help me pay for my trip?
Yes! American Leadership offers a flexible EZPay Plan to help manage the cost. We also offer a free fundraising guide to help you raise money for your trip, and a friend referral program that will help you and your friend earn money for your program.

How does American Leadership help prepare me for my future?
Our programs present a unique opportunity for students to experience the world and develop cultural competency as well as leadership, teamwork and communication skills through a host of activities designed to help you grow in self-confidence and flourish with new found independence. You will return to your classroom and community empowered to make a positive impact. The experience will give you a competitive edge when applying to college and for scholarships and when entering the workforce. You can also earn college credit. How do I prepare for the program?
You will be in regular contact and have orientation meetings with your Teacher Counselor and fellow student travelers. These will be online unless you happen to live close by. You will go over what to expect abroad, what is expected of you, what to pack, passport and visa requirements, key information about the culture of the destination countries, how to keep a travel journal and much more. How do I earn college credit?
High school juniors and seniors who travel on our programs are able to earn academic credit through California State University, Sacramento. Interested students will complete a proposal, gain approval through their faculty sponsor, and submit their project upon completion of the program. How does American Leadership select Teacher Counselors?
The educators we choose to lead our programs are experienced travelers with plenty of classroom experience and loads of energy! They are trained in orientation procedures, group management and emergency management and work closely with the Program Director to ensure a fun and safe experience.

Who is the Program Director?
The Program Director meets you when you arrive overseas and takes care of all the logistical and educational aspects of the program. Program Directors have other careers as well. They may be writers, artists, teachers, singers, musicians, art historians, film producers or translators.They are multilingual, college-educated, very well traveled, passionate about the countries they work in, and passionate about working with young people. They all have fascinating stories and are usually the highlight of the program!

What kind of passport or documentation do I need to travel?
As a valid passport is required to travel overseas you should apply for one immediately. You will be notified of visa requirements for US citizens. Because the time required to process passports and visa applications can be six to eight weeks for each country, it is essential to obtain your passport as soon as possible.
Passport forms can be obtained at your local post office or visit travel.state.gov.

What about non-US citizens?
Non-US citizens must check about visa requirements with the embassy or consulate of each country that they are visiting, including those they are passing through (even if they are not spending a night). Please be aware that the time required to process visa applications can be several weeks for each country. So you should begin the application process as soon as possible. What happens in an emergency?
While students are abroad, American Leadership can be reached 24 hours a day, both in the US and overseas. A Program Director accompanies each program at all times and knows how to deal with minor illnesses, accidents, and so on. Program Directors are in constant touch with our Regional Operations Managers abroad. Teacher Counselors also have mobile phones. All students are covered by a travel insurance policy that includes, among other coverage, worldwide medical assistance, evacuation, and other services if they are required.
